Sport Clubs

Introduction

A sport club is a voluntarily organized group of students that meet together to further their common interests in an activity.  Each club will determine its own membership guidelines, but such guidelines must be free of any restrictions or discrimination based on race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, disability, age, or sexual orientation.  Any restrictions based on gender are subject to the approval of the University of Minnesota Duluth and the Recreational Sports Outdoor Program.

Sport Clubs offers University of Minnesota Duluth students an opportunity to participate in competitive, instructional, and recreational sport clubs.  Involvement in these clubs can enhance their collegiate experience and contribute to a well-rounded education.  The competitive aspect of sport clubs allows members to contend with other intercollegiate sport clubs, while the instructional aspect allows members to further develop their skills and knowledge of an activity.

Individual sport clubs are managed and organized by its members and supervised by the Sport Club Coordinator.  It is the responsibility of the club to elect officers and to coordinate practices, competitions, meetings, events, transportation, publicity, and other club activities.  It is through this coordination that our officers develop leadership, delegation, and organizational skills, which will assist participants well beyond their time at UMD.

Mission

The UMD Sport Clubs Program exists to support student-initiated organizations related to sport and physical activity in order:

  • To expose students to new activities.
  • To continue and enhance skills already acquired.
  • To develop student leadership skills.
  • To provide opportunities for students to develop positive interpersonal relationships.
  • To promote an appreciation for cultural diversity.
  • To provide an atmosphere in which students can compete against other clubs and universities.
