Recreational Sports Outdoor Program is one of the largest employers of students on campus and is committed to providing leadership and career-enhancing opportunities for our student staff. Over 200 students a year are involved as lifeguards, sport officials, security, clerical, weight-room, facility & program supervisors, Outdoor Program volunteers, graphic designers, climbing instructors and more. We are looking for students who are interested in promoting healthy, active lifestyles and connections to the outdoors. You need to be willing to build your skills of working with people and work hard toward supporting and representing the department.

Are the hours going to work with my schedule? There are a lot of facility and programming hours that need to be filled by student employees. We understand the rigors of class schedules and are willing to be as flexible as possible with work schedules.
What will I get paid? Base pay for entry level positions is $7.25 per hour ranging to $10.50 for advanced and supervisory positions.  Some volunteer positions are available.
How do I Apply? Current job oppenings are posted on our chalk board in the Sports and Health Center just before the RSOP Welcome Desk. If you see something you are interested in, fill out the corresponding application form. You are also welcome to check in with the department heads about future job availability.

Intramural Sports Student Supervisor, Official, Field Manager

These are leadership positions that help orchestrate the Intramural Sport’s program, oversee facility operations in the evenings and assist with risk management for the department. If you like interacting with your peers and spending time on the court or in the field officiating may be perfect for you. There are a variety of sports throughout the year that require officials. Sea Kayak Instructor

The sea kayak instructor’s job duties include: instructing beginning through advanced sea kayaking skills on inland lakes, Duluth’s Waterfront, Apostle Islands and North Shore locations. This includes providing sea kayak instruction in Safety and Rescue Courses, four to seven hour tours, and two to three day courses. Also included is involvement in equipment, facility and administrative maintenance. The Aquatic Center maintenance will be incorporated into this job and will be shared with co-workers. Stand-Up Paddleboard and van driver training will be conducted as needed.

Get involved with leading activities, workshops, and trips that are related to the outdoors or craft making.  Develop skills to become a leader in education through participation in a fun environment.  Begin by volunteering then move into paid positions.  Meetings every other week (see the Activities Catalog for dates and times).

Graphic Designer
Work as a Graphic Designer to create and develop basic materials that include flyers, banners and brochures for Recreational Sports Outdoor Program. Other responsibilities consist of information distribution, photography and other computer work. This is a position where you can be creative and build upon your skills as a graphic designer. We will help and support you in the learning process.

Youth Camp Counselor
Enjoy a summer of teaching, programming and leading youth in fun adventures. This rewarding opportunity will give you a chance to write age appropriate lesson plans, deliver dynamic programming, and interact with a diverse group of youth. The RSOP Youth Camps takes place 5
weeks during the summer. The alternate weeks RSOP will strive to accommodate you with work inside the recreation facility. This is a unique opportunity to diversify your skills working with children and interact with patrons in our facility.
